The Whakatāne Town men’s team can be reasonably happy with their form over the past month.
Whakatane’s premier football team have made it through to the next round of the Chatham Cup and Miller Cup, while also winning all but one of their league games so far.
Their most recent victory saw them pick up a 2-1 win over Tauranga City League One with the goals going to Elias Thomas and Brendan Mitchell.
Against Otumoetai, a Cameron Wills’ goal wasn’t enough as they fell to a 2-1 loss.
The league game prior to that saw them draw 2-all with Waipuna Rangers thanks to goals from Nathan White and Brendan Mitchell, which both came in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Chatham Cup was a hard fought 1-0 win over West Hamilton United, thanks to a goal to Mitchell, who is in top form and will be hoping to replicate that this weekend against Tauranga City Relics at Rex Morpeth Park.
In the next round of the Chatham Cup on King’s Birthday Weekend, they face a trip to Whenuapai West where they will collide with West Coast Rangers FC.
In the men’s Baywide division 2 grade, Ōhope and Plains Rangers have been more than competitive.
Ōhope fell to a 3-2 defeat to Plains Rangers with Sean Owen and Jon Barnes, a former Ranger, scoring in the defeat.
The following weekend saw them fall to a top Papamoa side 2-0, while last weekend they suffered a 2-1 loss to Ngongotaha with Jim Hagger scoring the goal off the interchange.
This weekend, they will be hoping to find top form again as they battle the Tauranga City Juggernauts at Bluett Park.
In Baywide division 3, Kawerau Sports, in their first year back after a hiatus, have been more than holding their own.
Last weekend was a bye, but before that they managed a win and a draw, playing some fantastic football.
The 3-all draw came against Papamoa Division 3 with Corey Grimmer, Saveth Pon and Simon Storey all scoring.
Against Taupō away, Kawerau produced another impressive performance with Robbie Mitchell, Pon and George Richmond finding the goal in the victory.
This weekend, Kawerau who sit third in the league, are at home to fourth-placed Omokoroa Fury with the clash at Tarawera Park expected to be a cracker.
The Whakatāne Town men’s over 35s team have played some solid football but sit bottom of their competition without a win.
Meanwhile, in the women’s football grade, Alice Brogden continues to find the goal for Whakatāne Town.
They racked up a 4-3 win over the Papamoa Legends, before backing that up with a 3-1 win over the Papamoa Icons thanks to a brace from Brogden and a goal to Emma Owen.
This weekend, they are at home against Otumoetai FC Bay women and will be looking to make it four straight wins in the league.
They’re also through to the next round of the Kate Sheppard Cup, their equivalent of the Chatham Cup, after Papakura defaulted giving Town a 3-0 win.
Next week in their second-round contest, they welcome Western Springs AFC, who will no doubt provide a difficult challenge.
