Letter: Cycle track upgrade needs prioritising

.

Aimee MacKenzie

I am writing to express my disappointment regarding the decision not to upgrade the Coastlands cycle track.

This route is heavily used by cyclists of all ages, from commuters to families, and its current state is unsafe and inadequate.

The track suffers from poor maintenance, uneven surfaces, and lack of proper lighting, making it hazardous, especially during bad weather or in the evenings.

Encouraging cycling is essential for reducing traffic congestion, lowering pollution, and promoting a healthier lifestyle. However, without proper infrastructure, many potential cyclists are discouraged from using this route.

Investing in an upgraded cycle track would benefit the entire community, making cycling a safer and more viable option. I urge the local authorities to reconsider their decision and prioritise improvements to the cycle track for the well-being of all residents.

I look forward to seeing action taken on this matter.

Editor note: Whakatāne District Council has declined to respond to this letter but expects to release a update on the matter in the near future.
