The Clothing Project and Radio 1XX collaboration has seen the Eastern Bay community collate a staggering pile of pyjamas to give to children in need.
The Clothing Project Founder Amy Revell said the charity was hoping the April-long pyjama drive would drum up at least 200 pairs of pyjamas.
It surpassed this with 282 donated, plus $1800 in cash donations, which will buy a further 180 pairs of pyjamas.
“We want to reinforce the community support has been massive, and much appreciated,” Ms Revell said.
Ms Revell and 1XX promotions manager Keziah Barlow said they expected success, but not at that level.
“There are so many pyjamas’ orders that may be able to be filled, with both the size required for the child, as well as the size above for when they grow.
“For these kids, it’s so great to have something new,” Ms Revell said.
Ms Barlow said there were some “really cute” and more expensive pyjamas donated, too, with designs like Bluey and Mickey Mouse.
“So many were made of that thick flannelette – so cozy,” she said.
The drive was sponsored by New World Whakatāne, New World Ōpōtiki and New World Kawerau.
Radio 1XX held a Pyjama Day and other businesses and organisations did the same, with Te Kura o Te Pāroa going one step further and making a video in support.
New World Kawerau donated 58 pairs of pyjamas and Nova Energy donated a box, significantly contributing to the total.
“A lot of businesses did their own thing, and then brought it into us,” Ms Barlow said.
