Local athlete Brenda Davis has returned home with a silver medal from the Australian Masters Track and Field Championships.
Davis claimed a silver in discus, as well as fourth place in the hammer throw, weight throw and throws pentathlon, and came fifth in the shotput.
She said there were 12 to 16 people competing in her age group, which provided her with some “good competition”.
“It also gives me an idea of who might be in my age group in the Oceania Masters Champs in Brisbane in September,” she said.
She received a medal for her placing in discus, but did not take the placing officially.
“When a New Zealander competes at the Australian Champs, we can receive a medal as well if we beat the other competitors in distance, but we don’t take their placing,” she said.
She said the time difference and warm weather was challenging.
“Adelaide is two-and-a-half hours behind New Zealand, so I was waking up between 3am and 4am most days and very tired by the afternoons.
“The weather also presents some challenges.
“When it was fine, it was very hot – around 31 degrees and no wind – but it’s better throwing in warmer weather than the cold.
“The last two days were torrential rain and windy, which isn’t ideal conditions for throwing.”
This is Davis’ fourth competition in Australia.
“I would have liked a couple more medals – my hammer and weight throw results were nowhere near my best distances but I wasn’t far off the third placing,” she said.
She will be working on her hammer and weight throws throughout winter in the lead up to the Oceania Masters Track and Field Championships, which will take place in September in Brisbane.
“Now I have an idea of who I’ll be facing and the distances they throw, I know what I need to concentrate on.”
