A fun evening of dance in all its form is on at the annual Dance Carnival next weekend.

Taking place at the Caledonian Hall in Kope, the Dance Carnival will be on from 7pm to 10.30pm, on Saturday May 10.

A variety of dance styles will be showcased, from Scottish country dances to belly dancing, line dancing, rock ‘n roll, Israeli dancing as well as sequence Latin Amercian and ballroom dancing.

The Whakatane Scottish Pipe Band will be paying some tunes, including the popular Dashing White Sergeant, Strip the Willow and Gay Gordons.

Besides the dance demonstrations, audience members will also have a chance to participate.

“People can watch, and they also dance because almost all the groups have a dance that the audience can do, some easy dances, almost like a line dance,” said one of the organisers, Graham Irving.

And for those who are super keen, practice Scottish country dancing sessions will be held beforehand, on Thursday May 8 and Friday May 9, from 7pm to 8pm, also at the Caledonian Hall.

“There are going to be some brilliant dances there.

“Last year’s event was very popular; we had close to a hundred people turn up.”

Supper will be supplied but bring your own drinks.

Entry is $10 cash at the door and children under 18 are free.
