I’m not usually a fan of the National Government; however, I am a fan of it allowing people to build granny flats on their properties.
This is an ideal way to ease the housing crisis. It would also cure the rapacious greed of some landlords.
The problem with renting is there is no recourse for tenants who face random rent increases for no apparent reason.
I am renting a 42-square-metre flat in a block of flats and have been hit with a 10 percent rent increase. Their argument is that my increase is still below market rent for a one-bedroom flat, for which, they say, the average rent is $330 a week. I have tried to ascertain what the average rent is for my tiny unit, but no one can tell me.
Anyone who is planning on building a granny flat and wants a non-smoking quiet tenant who respects their property and is prepared to rent at a reasonable rate, please let me know.
