A young, up-and-coming musician from the Eastern Bay is celebrating the release today of his debut single, Synthetic Horizons, a vibrant pop-rock track that showcases his impressive songwriting and musical talent.

Written and arranged by 12-year-old Rohan Evans, the song is now available on all major streaming platforms.

Rohan, who wrote the song when he was just 10 years old, said he composed the lyrics in a single day.

Since then, he’s spent time perfecting the music, adding instrumental layers and recording his creation.

“It’s about exploring the unknown and discovering new sounds,” Rohan said about the song.

He wrote it while learning about space and technology while still at Apanui School.

The recording of Synthetic Horizons took place at the Whakatāne Sound Project, Te Wai Orooro, over a couple of days.

Although Rohan sings and plays guitar and other instruments, the track is a collaboration with a talented line-up of local Eastern Bay musicians.

Hani Totorewa, who also served as the project manager, plays keys; Casey Magee contributes bass, and Kauri Jackson adds keyboard. Fraser Browne of Paper Cranes lent his expertise on the sound desk.

Rohan’s passion for music began around the age of eight or nine, starting with keyboard and piano before moving on to guitar and drums.

He loves a mix of genres, from rock and reggae to pop, and enjoys performing at open mic nights around Whakatāne.

The release of Synthetic Horizons marks an exciting milestone in Rohan’s budding music career.
