Newsies Jr takes to the stage this May

.

Get ready to Seize the Day as Newsies Jr bursts on to the stage at the Whakatāne Little Theatre in mid-May.

Presented by Stage Door Performing Arts Academy and directed by Trace Tidd, this high-energy, family friendly musical brings the inspiring true story of New York’s newsboys’ strike to life.

Based on Disney’s Newsies Jr, an abridged version of the 2012 Broadway hit (which itself was inspired by the 1992 film), this dynamic production showcases Whakatāne’s talented young performers (ages 9-14).

The show features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, delivering all the excitement and heart of the original in a thrilling and accessible junior edition.

Set in turn-of-the-century New York, the musical follows Jack Kelly, a charismatic leader who rallies his fellow newsboys to fight back against powerful newspaper publishers who have raised their prices at the workers’ expense.

Through resilience, unity, and determination, the newsies create a movement that proves they are stronger together.

“This is a story about courage, friendship, and standing up for what’s right,” said Tidd.

“We have a fabulous young cast who are working hard and pouring their hearts into learning all the scenes, songs, and dances.

“We can’t wait for them to take to the stage and share their talents with the community.”

Packed with show-stopping songs and thrilling choreography, Newsies Jr. is a must-see event for audiences of all ages.
