Neil Jones showcased his climbing strength and tactical skill to claim victory in the Whakatāne Cycle Club’s annual graded handicap race, taking home the Kevin Hunt Memorial Trophy.

The race, known for its challenging hilltop finish, delivered thrilling moments as riders battled it out in the testing Eagles Road parcours.

Starting in a break group of six riders, Jones had to overcome a five-minute deficit to the first group and stay ahead of a solo scratch rider Bailey Fredericksen, who started a further five minutes in arrears.

Supported mainly by Greg Malcolm and Dave Wright in a group of six riders, Jones maintained a punishing pace, helping to ensure Fredericksen remained out of sight for the duration of the four-laps. Jones and his group overtook the leading riders as they began their final lap.

Jones made his decisive move at the crest of the penultimate hill, pulling away with determination and leaving the competition behind.

Dennis Sax charged hard in the final 100 metres to secure second place, edging Greg Malcolm and Malcolm Harison in a tight finish.

Earlier in the day, the same riders tackled a demanding 2km individual time trial finishing atop Eagles Road hill.

Fredericksen proved his strength, clocking an impressive 3 minutes 23 seconds – 33 seconds ahead of Malcolm. Jones, Jason Boonen, and Sax all finished within 12 seconds of second placed Malcolm.

The Kevin Hunt Memorial Trophy holds special significance for the club, honouring Hunt’s legacy as an accomplished representative of New Zealand and a dedicated local cyclist.

Hunt’s passion for the sporting community left a lasting mark, and his memory continues to inspire local athletes.
