After the success of last year's inaugural renovation project, Trident High School’s Allied Trades Training students are once again rolling up their sleeves to renovate a new house as part of their hands-on learning experience.
The Level 2/3 Ringa Pukumahi – Allied Trades programme, launched last year, proved to be a valuable opportunity for 11 students to gain practical skills in house renovation, and this year’s project promises to be just as exciting.
Run through the school’s Futures Academy, the programme collaborates with local organisations and government entities, such as Ngāti Awa, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise, and the Ministry of Education, to provide intensive trades training that aligns with workforce and Māori business needs.
Julie Ball, the head of careers at Trident High School, is thrilled about the new project, which has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the community.
“When BOP House Removals director Steve Jones viewed the house at Champion Flour at Tauranga Port, he mentioned he had it earmarked for the ATT course. Michael Gregory, from Champion Flour, decided they would like to get on board and donate the house to us, which is greatly appreciated and so very kind.”
Once again, Steve and Karyn Jones of Bay of Plenty House Removals have offered their support, donating the removal costs and providing yard space at their Mill Road premises for the students to work on the house.
"This is an amazing gesture, and we are totally grateful," said Ms Ball.
The students will be mentored by certified builder Hamish Galloway, a skilled tradesman from the Eastern Bay.
The students aim to transform the house, which features matai floorboards, into a modern and functional home. The renovation will include a new kitchen, laundry, and bathroom layout, as well as new windows and a complete interior and exterior makeover.
“We are confident it will make a great home for someone when we look to offer it for sale by tender later in the year,” said Ms Ball.
