Coastguard Whakatāne has received a $15,000 funding injection thanks to participants of the recent Surtees Fishing Comp.
Surtees general manager Cliff Schick presented Coastguard Whakatāne president Nilesh Dahya with the cheque on Monday.
On the last weekend of February, 258 anglers descended on Whakatāne in 80 Surtees boats to participate in the annual competition.
Last year, the competition raised shy of $3500.
Mr Schick credits the increase in donations to having two major sponsors come on board – Garmin and Yamaha – and holding a traditional auction as opposed to a silent one.
Entrants also had the opportunity to upgrade their ticket when they purchased online, which built in a $10 donation to Coastguard.
More than $100,000 in prizes were dished out at Whakatāne Sport Fishing Club across three nights.
Mr Dahya said the funds would be a significant support for the local operation.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Surtees Boats for their continued support and to everyone who took part in the fishing competition.”
He said the funds would go a long way in helping to keep Coastguard’s rescue vessel maintained, their crew trained and operations running smoothly.
“Our volunteers dedicate countless hours to ensuring the safety of our boating community, and it’s support like this that not only helps us cover real operational costs – like fuel, safety gear and equipment upgrades – but also reminds our team that the community truly values what we do.
“This donation helps us plan with confidence, whether it’s investing in training new crew, maintaining our rescue assets, or staying ready to respond whenever we’re needed.
“We’re proud to be part of such a generous and connected community.”
