Singer and songwriter Dave Alley is eagerly anticipating his debut solo performance for an Eastern Bay audience tomorrow.
A seasoned musician who has made his mark from Tauranga to Auckland and beyond, Alley is on Waiheke Island, where he recently wrapped up two shows, when the Ōpōtiki News/Beacon catches up with him this week. He has also just completed a four-gig tour with a fellow musician.
“I’ve passed through the Eastern Bay before in various roles – as a sound technician and support act for Pacific Curls and Whirimako Black onArts on Tour – and I’ve also played a few times in Tau-ranga,” he said.
Originally from Gisborne, Alley’s musical roots are firmly planted in East Coast rhythms.
Over the years, his influences have spanned a broad spectrum, from Bob Dylan and Santana to David Bowie, Neil Young, African music, and Celtic tunes. A versatile performer, Alley is primarily known for his acoustic guitar work but enjoys mixing up his sound. His music blends roots, blues, rock, reggae, funk, folk, and South Pacific genres.
“My show has a lot going on,” he said. “I love words, so there are stories behind the songs, what inspired them and the experiences from my road travel and experiences along the way.”
Alley’s set features a full, dynamic sound, as he plays harmonica, fretless bass, and incorporates looping techniques.
“I’m really pleased with where my solo shows are now,” he said.
With three albums to his name and a repertoire of 60 original songs, Alley’s performances are packed with personal music. “The show will be almost entirely original material, though I’ll throw in the occasional cover.
“I’ve played in cover bands over the years, but now my focus is on my originals.”
Music has been a lifelong passion for Alley, starting with piano lessons at the age of eight, followed by guitar at 11.
“When I was 18 or 19, I moved to Auckland to pursue my musical career.”
Though Auckland remains his base for part of the year, Alley also spends several months each year performing in Austria, Germany, and Belgium.
Tonight, Alley will perform at Tauranga’s Jam Factory, and tomorrow night, he’ll bring his soulful, eclectic performance to Ōpōtiki Citizens Club.
