Two community groups and a football club have joined forces to create a new event - Love Your Bike.

People can bring their bikes to CReW, Community Resources Whakatāne on Te Tahi Street, on Friday, February 14, or buy a bike when they arrive.

Pou Whakaaro and Cycling Without Age will be selling bikes, parts, running an auction for an electric bike, and offering minor repairs and classes as well as demonstrating how to best repair a puncture.

At least 35 repaired child and adult bikes, road and off-road bikes and unicycles will be on sale from $15 to $45.

Parts such as seats, brakes, inner tubes and wheels will be available, ranging from $2 to $20.

A repaired electric bike has been donated and offers of over $500 can be made via the CReW Facebook page.

CReW Business Manager Gerard McCormack said this initiative was about getting bikes back into the community at a low cost.

“We get a lot of bikes in over Christmas; people bring their bikes in, we fix them up, and put them back in the community,” he said.

“It’s as much about cycling as it is about reusing, for us.”

Cycling Without Age president Maureen Verstegen said this was one of several events organised as part of Bike Month.

“Gerard came up with the idea so we could show people what we do, and some might be interested in volunteering with us,” she said.

“It’s nice to have a such a great collaboration between community organisations.”

Proceeds will be split equally between CReW and Cycling Without Age to put back into the community.

Ōhope Beach Football Club’s mens’ team heard about the initiative and offered their support by cleaning the grounds of CReW.

Club president Jon Barnes said the team gathered at CReW over the weekend for a working bee.

“Members of our men’s team came together to help upkeep CReW’s property, giving it some TLC and attention to ensure it remains a welcoming and functional space for those it serves,” he said.

“CReW does incredible work in our community, and we are stoked to support their kaupapa. As a football club, we value teamwork not only on the field but also in the wider community.

“We look forward to continuing our efforts on and off the field and thank CReW for the opportunity. We encourage support for CReW, especially with their upcoming Love Your Bike morning.”
