Nearly 50 surfers and supporters attended the first Adaptive Surfing Day, with feedback declaring the day a success.
Parafed Play & Youth Lead Jo Jackson said it was a great event for all surfers, families, friends and volunteers.
“It was such an awesome day; I’m looking forward to the next one.”
Surfers of all abilities were supported by surfing instructors from Salt Spray Surf School.
Whakatāne District Councils’s Te Pūaha Fund sponsored the event, and the Wilson Home Trust provided a beach wheelchair to increase accessibility to the activities.
The next two adaptive surfing dates have been postponed due to weather, the January 26 date has moved to March 1, and the February 1 date to March 15.
Both surfing dates are fully booked out, but for anyone who has missed out a waitlist is available in case of cancellations.
Adaptive Paddle Boarding is scheduled to go ahead on March 2, for which registrations have opened this week.
