Letter: Health hikoi date set

Thank you to everyone who has expressed support for the Hikoi for Health to protect the right to safe birthing.

There has been an overwhelming response, with a number of people putting their hands up to help. I have been in touch with everyone that I am aware of, including people who have written to the Beacon about it, but if I have missed anyone please get in touch.

The hikoi is set for Saturday, February 15, gathering at noon at Mitchell Park (where the Sunday Market is held) and walking to Wharaurangi (The Gap).

It’s a whānau-friendly event to support all our maternity services and we are asking people to wear orange if the closure of local obstetrics and gynecology services would have put them or their whānau at risk. Look out for our Facebook event, posters and media for more information.

In response to some recent criticisms of me for organising this hikoi, let me be clear that this event is about local women’s access to a full range of local maternity care.

It is not about me, and I make no apologies for supporting the community in defending local health services.

Before putting my hand up I waited to see if anyone else was going to organise a community response, so I could support them.

Many people suggested a march, and a few had offered to help, but no one was willing to be the organiser.

When I approached a few people to see if they were keen, they suggested I do it, but I want to be clear that it is a team effort.

I’d ask that people get behind the kaupapa rather than undermining the community’s voice on this important issue.
