Letters: A blast from the past

.

D Dawson

As  a young man over 50 years ago, I was in court waiting for my case to come up and witnessed a young man being charged for a minor offence before me.

The chap’s name was Lucky and after the judge had discussed his case, he went on to question Lucky on his offending.

The judge said: “Lucky, I see you do not work and do not have a job, and you have no money and you are not on the dole. Now, tell me, how do you support yourself?”

There was a pause for a moment and all eyes were on Lucky who, after giving the question some thought, answered by saying: “Well, it’s like this your honour, I live off my wits.”

Again, the court room fell silent and left the judge speechless, then he told Lucky he was not so lucky this time.
