Sean and Cameron Wills are stoked to have raised more than $4000 for the Cancer Society.

The pair recently took part in the 72-hole challenge, which saw them play four 18-hole rounds of golf in one day.

While they admit to not being the best golfers, they were keen to give back to the Cancer Society which had supported Sean in 2020 when he had Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Despite the very early start and less-than-ideal weather, Sean was chuffed which how the day panned out.

“Overall, it was a really good day. The weather didn’t exactly play ball, with a few heavy showers coming down on us halfway through the day, but it was probably better than a scorching heat like the days before.”

He said to surpass their original fundraising target was a highlight.

“Absolutely stoked to raise over $4000, especially when the original goal of $3000 was looking unachievable in the days leading up to the event.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who donated, making it all worthwhile. The link is still open for anyone else that still wants to donate.”

It took them about 13 hours to complete the four rounds of golf at Whakatāne Golf Club.

“We tee’d off at 5:30am and finished at 6:30pm, so a good 13 hours out on the course with only a small lunch break.”

As expected, part of the last round proved the most challenging.

“The toughest part was definitely the front nine of the last round. By that point, the legs and feet were fairly well gone, so it was a bit tough to stay motivated. But then, the back nine meant the end was in sight, and we managed to get back in the groove and bring it home.”

“We both just feel proud to have raised so much for such a worthy cause.

“It really was a marathon, walking 40 kilometres over the day, but for it all to be for charity really makes it all worthwhile.”

Sean said they played some reasonable golf during the challenge. There were plenty of drives smashed down the middle, some outstanding iron shots and plenty of good putts.

“Both of us managed to shoot our lowest-ever scores for 18 holes. Overall, I had 393, thanks to the last round blowing out a bit, and Cam shot 376. He even broke 90 on one of the rounds for the first time.”

They say many people jumped on board to help make the day successful.

“We have a few people to thank: Lululemon, Huffer, and Arrow Accountants for supplying us with gear and balls for the day, Whakatane Golf Club and especially Carole Fraser in the pro shop for their support around the whole event. Also, our older brother, Ryan, for jumping in for the majority of the day, my partner, Samantha Western, for driving the cart for us with our bags on it for the whole 13 hours, and our family for just the general support during the day.”
