A new pop-up gallery in Whakatāne is a vibrant addition to the town's art scene.

The Arts Collective Exhibition, which opened yesterday, showcases a fantastic array of work by artists from across the Eastern Bay, with plenty of work for sale.

Located in the spacious former Dick Smith building on the lower Strand, the gallery is a collaboration between Arts Whakatāne, Whakatāne Arts and Crafts, and the Arts Forum Charity Trust.

The project was made possible through the efforts of the trust’s David Poole, who secured the building for use as a gallery space.

Sue Whale, President of Arts Whakatāne, said the gallery would feature a diverse range of art and crafts.

“We have quilting, ceramics, other three-dimensional works including sculpture, toi Māori, whimsical constructions, beautiful porcelain, photography and, of course, drawings, paintings, and jewellery,” she said.

The exhibition also includes a special mini exhibition titled Shades of White, which showcases works from a previous show held in Auckland. A book featuring these works is available for purchase, Poole added.

Whale said they had a fantastic response to their adverts about the new gallery.

“I was overwhelmed with forty people answering our call for entries.”

Eastern Bay artists are encouraged to get in touch if they wish to exhibit in the gallery, which will be open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-4pm, throughout December.
