Edgecumbe College seeks name change

Edgecumbe College is looking to change its name to Rangitāīki College and would also be known as Te Kura Tuarua o Rangitāīki.

The change is being spearheaded by its board of trustees, following engagement with iwi, hapū and community members. Feedback is being sought from parents and students.

Board presiding member Reuben Araroa said the new name embodied a vision for the college to grow and evolve, symbolising a commitment to uniting as a community and embracing new opportunities together.

“It’s more than a name change; it’s a bold step forward – a testament to the courage and dedication needed to create a place where students and teachers can thrive and strengthen their pride in our school,” said Mr Araroa.

“This new identity not only honours our past but also opens doors to exciting possibilities for our future.”

Principal Shelley Power welcomed the opportunity to refresh and reform the college around its new name to become the vibrant, student-centred learning environment that it had the potential for.

“The new name is a wero for us, a challenge to be different and better.”

In its message to parents and whānau the board said the change was a starting point and that other changes would evolve from this, including a new uniform to be phased in over 2025 and 2026. Parents and whanau have until Friday, November 22 to offer feedback.
