Most of us have authoritarian tendencies and love a strong, charismatic leader.
From ancient times, when gladiatorial swordsmen fought each other, animals and slaves in the arenas of Rome, human nature is to love cruelty and revere the domineering bully.
Donald Trump fills this model nicely, with accompanying servings of lies and attempted twisting of the law. According to David Frum, a celebrated political analyst, there will now be chaos.
One example: although the president may not shut down investigations, or pardon himself, he will try to smash up the legal system, against tremendous opposition, of course. (for further interesting election commentary, see Q&A of November 3 on TVNZ +; and I highly recommend the Chris Hedges' Post-election Livestream Q&A)
Two quotes (slightly abridged) from Adolf Hitler, another notable cult figure (and you know what happened there!):
" The majority can never replace the man"
"The broad masses of the nation are more easily deceived than they are consciously or intentionally bad. The greater the lie, the better chance that it will be believed. All epoch-making events have been produced not by the written, but by the spoken word."
Roll on the aggressive oligarchic damage.
