Letter: Is council liable in natural disasters?

What is the council’s liability regarding natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, landslips etc?

Is there a contingency fund? Where? How much? And who controls this fund? And are the criteria advertised to all citizens?

Recent events make it imperative that local people are fully aware of the benefits and shortfalls of the existing protocols.

What liabilities are the responsibility of the council? Or does personal insurance absolve them from the far-reaching claims that occur i.e. last man standing pays.

There have been building permits issued, which many a prudent person would not have contemplated.

Given the council’s lack of perspective, this may affect a substantial liability on the ratepayer, who is already fleeced mercilessly by the powers that be, without this added responsibility.

Perhaps it is time for local councils and the Government to instigate a set of procedures that encompass a fair and just compensation.

These procedures should be widely publicised and unambiguous.  This would allow both builder and buyer the latitude of a well-informed decision.
