Letter: Money pot is empty

To expand on Bob Nichol’s letter (Beacon November 1), the continual clamour for more governmental and local body financing, whilst in most parts are probably for very worthy institutions.

However, the money pot is empty, so those requests for funding can only be achieved by increasing taxes or reducing the financing of currently funded recipients or reducing governmental services such as health care, education and transport et al.

I doubt if this would find favour with the majority of New Zealand citizens.

As everyone has an aversion to tax increases and demand adequate social and infrastructural improvements, it is difficult to know where the increased expenditure expected is to originate from.

Perhaps and maybe the attitude toward the dreaded Thatcher poll tax may have softened a little.

It would be interesting to know the current attitude regarding the implementation of such a concept, and what alternative is envisaged.
