Eighteen fights are confirmed for tomorrow night’s Mortal Combat Fight Night at the Whakatāne War Memorial Centre.
The card is heavy with Eastern Bay kickboxers, with 22 fighters from Whakatāne, Otakiri, Ōpōtiki, Murupara and Rūātoki pumped and ready to step into the ring.
Other fighters are travelling from Rotorua, Mt Maunganui, Papamoa and Taupō for the event.
Organiser Carl Cowley is looking forward to this year’s fight night, particularly the title fight between Ōpōtiki’s Liam Witbrock and Ryder Onfroy from Rotorua.
Witbrock’s original opponent for the International Kick Boxing Federation New Zealand Championship super lightweight title was Lockie Cameron from Freestyle MMA in Morrinsville.
However, Cameron has had to withdraw because of injury.
Onfroy, an international representative from Forged Fitness in Rotorua, fought the Tahitian Champion last month for the IKBF Pacific Championship Title, narrowly losing in a split points decision.
Cowley was the referee for the fight and was impressed by Onfroy’s performance.
“The fight was awarded ‘fight of the night’ and many in attendance thought Onfroy had done enough to win the international title, including myself.”
Witbrock trains with Cowley’s Whakatāne Fight Club, with top-up training at Scorpion Claw Fight Club in his hometown.
Doors open at 4pm with the first fight at 5pm.
Door sales are available.
