Zonta Whakatāne is super excited to recently donate $1500 to Rangiatea – Whakatāne Teen Parent Unit – for 20 driving lessons with Marylou's Driving School – and is encouraging the public to support its next fundraising movie night.
Sue Whale from Zonta said the donation makes a huge difference to these young parents, enabling them to transport their children safely to childcare, run errands, and eventually commute to work.
“We hope to continue our support in the future.”
The impact of this initiative is already evident. Student Lily Kohi recently obtained her full driver’s licence, thanks to the lessons. Living in Ōpōtiki, Lily plans to further her studies in Whakatāne next year. She said having a licence would allow her to drive to her classes and drop her daughter off at daycare while she studies.
Another inspiring story is that of Lily’s sister, Shelby Kohi, who has taken her first steps toward independence by passing her Learner’s licence.
Shelby aims to achieve her restricted licence next year, excited about the independence that a full licence will bring.
To support more initiatives like this, Zonta invites the community to attend their upcoming movie night fundraiser. Featuring the film Never Look Away, the event will take place at Whakamax on Monday, November 18, at 6:45pm. Tickets are available through TryBooking.
