TWENTY-SEVEN teams from eight Eastern Bay schools enjoyed themselves playing lawn bowls in the sunshine last Thursday.

Organiser Regg Martin, the Whakatane Bowling Club coach, said bowls was a great sport that could be enjoyed by everybody.

“This is one of the sports that most people can play,” he said.

“You don’t have to be super fit.”

In fact, people did not need to have legs, they could also be without arms, and they could be blind – but they could still play bowls.

Mr Martin said this was the fourth year the school outing had been held.

“We are wanting to get young people involved with bowls,” he said.

“The schools have had some practices before finishing with this play off.”

Whakatāne Intermediate School won the year 7 and 8 competition with team from St Joseph’s Matatā in second and third place.

In the year 5 and 6 competition, Apanui Aces took the trophy ahead of St Joseph’s Matatā and Apanui Cobras.

Students from the various schools had a great time socialising with one another and learning the sport of bowls
