Robert Tripp has joined a handful of golfers to successfully navigate the par 3 fourth hole at the Te Teko Golf Club in one shot.

A hole in one is meant to be a rare feat in golf, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with one particular hole at the club.

The 150m par 3 has been home to a few holes in one over the past year, with Tripp’s effort the most recent of the bunch.

The 74-year-old was playing a round at the Te Teko course when he aced the fourth hole.

Tripp opted for a club that he’d only recently put back in his bag, his Cleveland high launch 5 wood, because he had gone through a phase of not hitting it well.

Standing on the fourth tee, Tripp admitted there were a few nerves, but he swung the club and hit  a near perfect shot as it sailed towards the hole.

“I actually thought it had gone through the back of the green, but one of the guys told me it had hit the pin, so I was a bit apprehensive.

“It was a bloody good feeling to see it in the hole.”

In his 20 years of playing golf, which he picked up as a bit of a hobby to keep fit, it is the first time Tripp has scored a hole in one.

“I’ve been close a few other times.”

He admits the rest of his round was a bit bumpy, although he was pretty happy to finish eighth overall and shoot 89.

“You always hope to hit a hole in one, but it was definitely unexpected. It was a pretty decent hit.”

Tripp, a member of the Kawerau Golf Club, said it hadn’t fully sunk in yet and he was still coming to terms with the fact he’d scored an ace.

It’s a good achievement considering professional golfers can go their entire career without scoring a hole in one.

Tripp’s focus is to carry on playing golf and enjoying it.
