WE recently spent a very pleasant few days in Whakatāne and surrounds – our first visit to this interesting area.
We enjoyed good shopping, cafes and restaurants and we were very impressed with the activities and the clubs available, plus two golf courses.
The locals were very helpful with directions and suggestions. Ōhope Beach was beautiful.
However, Sullivan Lake was a disappointing eyesore. Dead ducks floating in the ugly lilies, which are rapidly extending up the lake. It is obvious there has been no maintenance done, with thick weeds around the edge and long grass adjacent to the path. It was horrible to look at. Shame on those responsible as this could be a beautiful area.
There is a lot of history in the area; and we will be back.
