A SPIN-OFF series following children of immigrant families will be starring seven-year-old Apanui School student Kyla Dang.

Takeout Kids is in its second season, and the episode following Kyla, and her family as they navigate their business City Nails, will air on Tuesday, September 17.

Kyla is the daughter of well-regarded City Nails owners Kim Dang and John Ork.

Ms Dang said this experience was a way to capture a moment in time for the family.

“It’s something for our kids, for memories in the future,” she said.

“The film crew were nice and patient, waiting for all the best moments to capture.”

The Spinoff crew visited Whakatāne six months ago and followed Kyla and her family around for a week, through school, swimming, dance classes, and even going to bed.

“We wanted to show our normal life, what it’s like for the kids of immigrant families with parents working.

“Things like the girl’s routine was having late nights and going to bed at 11pm because dinner was so late every night after work,” Ms Dang said.

They also filmed how Kyla helps her parents at City Nails by bringing customers the book of options for nail colours and nail polish, and sweeping and mopping the floor.

Kyla said it “feels good” to be the main character, and her friends at school were excited about the show.

She and her friends were filmed playing bull rush, but Kyla clarified although she likes the game, she does not like tackle bull rush.

“I got tackled by a group of boys,” she said.

Ms Dang said her family were happy to share their life and spread awareness about the realities of being immigrants in New Zealand.

“We want to show our busy life, what it’s like to be immigrants – life is really hard, and how hard we have to try to live in this country, and that we are doing good,” she said.

Kyla is excited to see her episode released online next week.

“I’m going to see the exact time it is on and go up to my TV and watch it,” she said.

Ms Dang thanked the film crews, Apanui School for being so open to allow the film crews in to share Kyla’s story, and City Nails’ supportive customer base.

Kyla’s episode of Takeout Kids will premiere on the Spinoff Website on Tuesday, September 17, with Kyla Dang’s episode.
