WHAKATĀNE Croquet Club held a two-day tournament at the weekend, attracting players from as far as Taranaki.

With players travelling large distances, the organisers decided not to cancel the event despite the poor weather forecast on Friday.

Saturday morning started with light rain, easing to a drizzle.

The start of play was delayed but at about 9.30am players donned their wet weather gear and took to the lawns.

After squeegeeing  off puddles,  it was not too bad to play on.

The championship singles were played, and everyone was keen to test their skills.

Conditions on the second day were much improved, with the sun drying off the lawns.

Results of section play were:

Section one – 1, Peter Filbee, Taranaki;    2, Cindy Clarke, Whakatāne; 3, Steve Clarke, Whakatāne.

Section 2 – 1, Peter Ridealgh, Whakatāne; 2, Betty Ridealgh, Whakatāne; 3, Sally Hura, Rotorua.
