A WHAKATĀNE teen is thrilled to have her painting selected for the National Youth Art Awards.

Belle Warner, a student at Whakatāne High School, created the work titled Child’s Pose as part of her art class. The painting captures a moment in time with her band of the same name.

The Youth Art Awards, hosted by the Waikato Society of Arts, attract entries from across the country.

“It was in year 10 during an art showcase event when my band and I performed,” Belle explained.

“The photo was taken by our drummer in the music room just before we went on stage.

“The main person in the photo is my best friend, and I am the other person. I felt it really captured the essence of school music and our band in that moment.”

Her artist’s statement describes the painting as evoking nostalgia and curiosity, portraying the music room where they bonded.

“Its monochrome palette and composition create a dramatic allure, prompting viewers to question its candidness and the unseen camera’s role.”

Describing her art, she said: “I’ve been drawing with pencils for half my life.

“In the past few years, I’ve done a couple of commissions and am trying to get more.

“I often give my pencil drawings as gifts, and a few family friends have commissioned me to do portraits of their children.”

In addition to painting, Belle plays instrumental guitar, performing originals and covers with her dad at various events. She also sings.

Belle, who is entering year 13 next year, is still exploring her future career options with her many talents.

“I love English and want to pursue something creative, but I haven’t quite figured out what that will be yet.”

An exhibition featuring the National Youth Art Awards finalists’ work will be held at Artspost Galleries in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) from July 26 to August 18.
